The sculpture depicts a scene from the Old Testament, the moment after the walls of Jericho collapsed, when the Israelites entered the city. The fall of a besieged city in the Bronze Age was almost always accompanied by violence and destruction.
The work shows an old man lying on the ground, his son kneeling, trying to protect him, while a conqueror raises his armed fist, ready to strike. For some, this scene represents the victory of the victors over the vanquished; for others, however, it reveals the horrors of war and the dual nature of human beings: faithful and protective, but also aggressive and destructive.
The dynamic composition evokes an event that, despite having occurred thousands of years ago, continues to resonate in the collective consciousness.
